Jacob says something that we’ve heard Locke say before – on the Island, your past doesn’t matter. He also says that everybody he’s brought to the Island is dead. Richard wonders why Jacob didn’t help them. Well, he wanted them to help themselves. It’s all meaningless if he forces people to do something. Richard points out that’s exactly what Silas is doing, and Jacob offers him a job on the spot. He can be Jacob’s representative, bringing his message to the people without Jacob taking an active hand in their destinies.
