Roger and Bert assume the worst when Lee complains, and Sal is summarily fired. And this is what kills me – when he goes to Don, the closest thing he has to a confidant, Don is just as angry as the rest. I have a hard time reading Don in this scene – personally, I think he’s legitimately shocked that somebody wouldn’t drop their pants to keep an account. And I think he assumes that homosexuals just hook up indiscriminately, so to him it doesn’t make any sense that Sal wouldn’t go for it. I don’t really get homophobia from him in this scene – to me, Don can accept any race, color, or creed, so long as they’re useful to him. If they bring in accounts and make money for the company, he’s completely fine. To my mind, he doesn’t think less of Sal for being gay, he thinks less of Sal for making a bad business decision. Maybe I’m being too charitable here, though.
