Mad Men

Mad Men Roundtable: Season 3, “The Arrangements”

MYNDI

The overall theme of this week’s episode was pretty clear.  If last week was about parties, this week is about family; mostly how parents and kids relate across generations.  You have Peggy and her mother; Betty and her Dad; a potential client and his wealthy father as well as the relationship between Sally and her grandfather; Sal and his wife and even Don and his parents.  There was a lot going on in this installment!

The story that wound to a close this week was that of Betty’s father Gene and his tenuous relationship with his daughter and son-in-law as well as the growing closeness he shared with his granddaughter.  Many people speculated that this was going to a bad place, so I was very relieved to see that wasn’t true.  As it turned out, Gene just saw the innocence he’d missed in Betty (or maybe, ignored years ago) and was trying to nurture this child who is forever trying to win her mother’s approval.  He let her drive the car (what is she, 10?), picked up her favorite snacks at the market and helped her sneak ice cream before dinner.  Basically, what every grandparent loves to do.  There was nothing untoward in his intentions or actions.
