Mad Men Roundtable: Waldorf Stories

And then we had Pete, back to acting like a spoiled brat; being nasty and flip to Peggy, irritating Don and spouting off to Lane, who’s been angling behind the scenes to bring Ken Cosgrove and his lucrative accounts over from Guyer.  Pete’s clearly still threatened by Kenny, and pitches a fit.  Lane, however, knows how to handle his talent.  He confides in Pete that Roger is “a child” and he needs someone to help Pete “pull the cart”, what with all this new business they’re winning and Roger clearly heading down a path to uselessness.

What I want to know is how Roger hasn’t had another heart attack yet?  It was great to see he and Joan being very romantic in the flashback, and it’s a tribute to John Slattery and Christina Hendricks that with just a bit of styling and makeup, their very mannerisms can make them seem years younger.  Back in the present day, Joan held both Roger and Don’s hands as they both nervously waited to hear the announcement of their Clio win; she is obviously the rock that holds everything together for these guys.  But when Roger drinks himself from “lubricated to morose”, Joan calls it a night.  Maybe as much as we wish these two would end up together, Joan is smart in knowing it was never really meant to be.
